I’m about done reading BLS, and are gonna start the year one challenge. I’ve aready bought BBLS and Shredded Chef. I get excited every time I think about my goals.

Great, great article. I’ve got a few questions, however. I’ve been lifting now for about 5 years, and really only a month or so have been SMART training (diet in check by tracking, progressive overloading in the 4-6 rep range, essentially following BLS) and have made substantial progress on cutting. Does this mean I’m technically a beginner by these terms, being that I’ve trained for years but only recently started becoming fully educated? Should I be cutting first? My plan was (starting at ~15% BF) to get down to about 8 or 9 (I am roughly 11-12% now). Should I be cutting that low, or bulk earlier to cash in on “genetic potential”?

Nicely done, Lyle — your reference documentation is what keeps me coming back (and buying your books…). It’s now down, but USED to have in the bodybuilding section a “compare yourself to Arnold” plug-in calculator based on height and wrist dimensions.. SInce it’s been down for years I can’t forward the link but I printed mine off and — surprise! — it’s fairly close to Casey’s model as listed above. I suppose it’s an entirely different question as to whether “genetic potential” implies anabolic enhancements. The kicker? I’m trying “au natural” but I live in Bangkok, where all steroids are sold cheaply over the counter. The Universe, She is an ironic place. 🙂
